You only start with one weapon, but you can find combat knives, pipe wrenches, shotguns, and even miniguns to name just a few. For one, this is how you improve your arsenal.
#JUPITER HELL DEMONS FREE#
You are free to leave right away, but exploration may be in your best interest. Levels are completely randomized, but sometimes, you find the elevator almost immediately, while other times, you need to uncover every square inch first. Your objective is to find the elevator to advance and get off each planet. There is also an option to manually target, which comes in handy with the numerous explosive barrels throughout the levels. By waiting in the corner, I picked them off as they came into range. There were a few times that I entered a room to loot a chest and could see four enemies approach. The game shows your chance to hit so you can decide whether rushing in or waiting is the better option. Waiting is usually used to take cover and open fire once the enemy makes its move. You can choose to wait, which serves as a “turn,” and then they will move. If you have ever played Superhot, you will see some similarities. I said turn-based earlier, but it’s not as simple as games like Final Fantasy Tactics where there is a clear distinction between each side’s turns. Diagonal movement is done via two separate movements quickly like up and left or down and right. Upon taking control of your character, you learn that you can only move in the cardinal directions: up, down, left, and right. And technicians have access to smoke bombs that break line of sight with enemies, which in turn allows for better positioning or easier escaping. Scouts utilize stealth for short periods of time, which can help get to a better position for combat. He gains fury by killing, which can be used to activate adrenaline which allows him to heal a bit and ignore the pain for a few seconds. Each of the three classes plays the same way with the exception of special abilities. The objective remains the same regardless of the class you choose: survive the hordes of demons and guards and mechs and drones and get to the next floor and the next floor and so on and so forth. I mean, you are still alone but you do not have to just play as a marine. You actually can play as a lone marine, scout, or technician. Wearing its influences on it’s sleeve like a tattoo on its forehead, this is a fast-paced (well, as fast-paced as turn-based can possibly be), in your face, hardcore, thrill ride. Connections to Doom aside, I just have to say: this game is a wild time.ĭeveloped by Chaosforge, Jupiter Hell “is a roguelike set in a 90s sci-fi universe.” You play as a lone space marine against hordes of demons on the moons of Jupiter.
#JUPITER HELL DEMONS PC#
I am actually kind of annoyed at myself for not following Jupiter Hell after PAX (I did not have a gaming PC at the time so anything I enjoyed at the show that was slated for PC release was kind of forgotten).
I chatted up one of the devs at the show and he gave me a business card with the game’s name on it: Jupiter Hell. It’s clear this game draws a lot of inspiration from Doom. Doom was one of the first FPS games I experienced. Now, I am a huge Doom fan, and not just the recent games. It had this dark space setting with heavy metal vibes, and all in all, looked really cool. Way back at PAX East 2018, I had an opportunity to demo this turn-based action game.
